I read in a magazine how Ricky Carmichael told people how to get over their fear if big jumps and I think it could work for you even though you use a skateboard. Start with smaller/easier things and slowly work up to it. No one runs before they walk and everyone starts out by crawling. If you keep up and stay determined you can be great, just don't expect it all at once. Pads? if you like having solid bones. You break a bone once and its easier to break it again.
