Does anyone have any good books to suggest?

The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan is really long and the first book is boring, but there's a lot of strong women characters and some of the story is based on King Arthur. Another good book is Graceling by Kristin Cashore (it's romance/action and although there's no war there's plenty of violence ;D).
