Why is it so hard to believe that we evolved from apes?

During the Scopes trial which brought evolution into the schools, the main piece of evidence was a tooth said to be ape evolving into man. It was later discovered, when the rest of the skeleton was found, it was actually from an extinct pig. So I won't let a pig make a monkey out of me.
